Dreamfall: the Longest Journey by Funcom Review
After a wait of more than six years, the story of the twin worlds of Stark and Arcadia has finally continued. This story began with the game The Longest Journey (TLJ), one of the most beloved games in the Adventure game genre. TLJ told the story of young and attractive art major April Ryan. April lived in a not-so-distant future, one in which the world of Stark, not unlike Earth, and a sister world, Arcadia, a world of magic, were threatened by the designs of some rather nefarious beings.
| Time has not been kind to April, she is not the same woman we knew in TLJ. |
It turned out that April was a “Shifter” and she was able to move, at will, between the two worlds. TLJ told her story, as she worked diligently to restore the balance between Stark and Arcadia, in a wonderfully written tale. An unbalance had occurred due to the actions of the above mentioned people, who will remain nameless to avoid TLJ spoilers. Needless to say, their work threatened both worlds, and the player, as April, played a pivotal role in setting things right.
That story (and I use the word “story” instead of “game” purposely) was told over several game discs, with a great interface, many plot-related twists and turns, and more than 20 hours of terrific gameplay, graphics, humor, and voice acting. It was these characteristics that made TLJ so memorable, while in the process creating very high expectations for any sequels.
| Meet Zoë Castillo. You’ll be spending most of your time with her. |
After that very long wait, fans of TLJ have finally gotten their wish for a sequel, with the release of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Was the wait worth it? In my opinion, yes. A game like Dreamfall is very difficult to categorize, mainly because I didn’t feel like I was playing a game at all – it was more like watching an interactive movie (more on this later). Let me also say this: While Dreamfall is a game that can stand on its own, it is extremely beneficial to have played TLJ as well, so you have some familiarity with the storyline, the twin worlds, and some of the major characters who make repeat appearances in Dreamfall.
Dreamfall tells the story of another attractive young woman named Zoë Castillo, who, like April before her, is a resident of Stark. Also, like April, she is oblivious to the existence of Arcadia. And finally, like April, she’s in for a rude awakening. Zoë has recently returned home from college, after dropping out, and has also recently broken up with her boyfriend, Reza. We meet Zoë when she awakes in her room in her father’s house in Casa Blanca. She is a woman who has lost her sense of direction, and doesn’t seem to care about anything anymore, not even herself (other than going to the gym, which she hasn’t quite given up on yet).
